CNAS Science Ambassador

Leadership Team Qualifications and Responsibilities

 

Purpose:

The Science Ambassador Leadership Team is a group of students who provide leadership to the Science Ambassador Program and help support the outreach and promotion of the college by:
  • Working closely with College leaders and staff
  • Representing the Ambassadors at meetings and providing regular feedback
  • Managing projects identified by the Ambassadors
  • Recruiting new Science Ambassadors and assisting with volunteer management

 

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Same as CNAS Science Ambassador Application
  • Must be a returning CNAS Science Ambassador
  • Must have demonstrated leadership qualities

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Members of the leadership team must be able to commit to 6 - 8 hours per month (with 1 – 2 hours each week for team meetings and one two-hour meeting a month for the full membership meetings).  Meeting these commitments is necessary to remain on the team.  All leadership team members are expected to help each other and make sure that our group operates well together.

President

The President provides overall leadership and oversight for the Science Ambassador Program. This role includes leading monthly general meetings, guiding and supporting the Vice Presidents, and serving as the primary point of contact between the Ambassador leadership team and program advisors. 

Vice President, Communications

The Vice President of Communications leads all marketing and communication efforts for the Science Ambassador Program. Responsibilities include managing the program’s website, social media channels, and content creation such as written stories, videos, and photos. This role ensures consistent and engaging messaging that reflects the mission and activities of the Science Ambassadors. 

The VP of Communications will collaborate closely with the CNAS Communications Team, including the CNAS Digital Communications Manager, Tom Windeknecht, to ensure communications alignment and support.

The VP may also collaborate with Chairs and committees for individual communications projects.

Vice President, Community Engagement

The Vice President of Community Engagement is responsible for fostering a strong sense of community, connection, and teamwork within the Science Ambassador Program. This role focuses on internal community building through activities such as team bonding events, social gatherings, and initiatives that support Ambassador well-being and collaboration.

The Vice President of Community Engagement will work closely with Divisional Dean/SA Director Stephanie Dingwall and Science Ambassador Assistant Director Joann Young to plan and implement team-building and community-building activities.

The VP may also collaborate with Chairs and committees for individual community engagement activities.

Vice President, Events

The Vice President of Events is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing events that represent and support the Science Ambassador Program. This includes managing logistics, timelines, and communication for key events such as Highlander Day and Discover UCR Student Panels, Homecoming, the Science Lecture Series, Welcome Week activities, and the New Faculty Reception. While not exhaustive, these examples reflect the types of events this role oversees.

In addition to event coordination, this role is responsible for managing the scheduling of Ambassadors for event coverage and verifying timesheets in a timely and accurate manner.

The VP of Events will collaborate closely with the CNAS Communications Team, including CNAS Events Manager Kodi Carter, to ensure alignment and support for CNAS events.

The VP may also collaborate with Chairs and committees for individual events.

Vice President, Projects

The Vice President of Projects serves as the primary liaison between the Science Ambassador Program, the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS), the broader university, and each Ambassador-led outreach initiative. These projects currently include SISTERS, BROTHERS, SMASH, Little Einsteins, and Science Olympiad—all of which are official UCR-recognized student organizations. Note: A new project, Science Fair Mentoring, is under development.

This role ensures clear communication, coordination, and alignment between each project and the goals of the Science Ambassador Program. The VP of Projects also works to maintain and strengthen existing partnerships with Riverside Unified School District and will take the lead in exploring outreach opportunities with additional local K–12 school districts to expand the program’s impact.

In addition, this position is responsible for tracking and reporting volunteer hours for all project-related activities.

The Vice President of Projects will maintain close communication and coordination with Divisional Dean and Science Ambassadors Program Director Stephanie Dingwall to strengthen program partnerships and school district engagement.

The VP of Projects is expected to work in partnership with project leads, chairs and committees.

Vice President, Recruitment and Tours

The Vice President of Recruitment (formerly VP of Tours) is responsible for coordinating and leading tours that showcase CNAS to prospective and admitted students, families, and school groups. This includes organizing tours for major campus-wide recruitment events such as Highlander Day and Discover UCR, as well as special CNAS-specific tours.

This role works in close partnership with Undergraduate Admissions and other campus partners to ensure tours are informative, engaging, and aligned with broader recruitment efforts. The VP of Recruitment is also responsible for scheduling tour coverage, ensuring Ambassadors are prepared to represent CNAS, and coordinating the submission of timesheets for all tour-related activities.

The Vice President of Recruitment will work with the CNAS Communications Team, including the CNAS Recruitment and Outreach Manager, to coordinate and support all tour-related activities.

The VP of Recruitment may also collaborate with Chairs and committees for individual recruitment and outreach projects.

Vice President, Transfer Student Relations

The Vice President of Transfer Student Relations supports and represents transfer students within the Science Ambassador Program. This role serves as the primary liaison between the Science Ambassadors, the CNAS Transfer Connections team, and the CNAS Transfer Peer Mentors, helping to strengthen communication, coordination, and collaboration across transfer-focused initiatives.

This position works closely with other Vice Presidents to ensure transfer students are welcomed, included, and fully integrated into Science Ambassador activities and events. The Vice President of Transfer Student Relations also advocates for transfer student needs and perspectives within the Ambassador leadership team and plays an active role in recruiting transfer students into the program.

In addition, this role leads the planning and coordination of Spring Quarter Highlander Day activities for transfer students, in partnership with CNAS staff and campus partners.

The VP may also collaborate with Chairs and committees on transfer-related initiatives and events.
